FOR INSPIRATION ONLY : RUN TMC POSTER

public.jpeg

Run TMC has inspired my work to this day. One of the first “brands” that was in form of a basketball team. Run TMC provided endless inspiration on and off the court that led to a ton of marketing and creative that produced hundreds of ads, products and messaging. You couldn’t help but root for them.

Run TMC made up of Tim Hardaway, Mitch Richmond and Chris Mullin. A pioneer in basketball culture, this trio is just as relevant today as it was almost 30 years ago. Check out the doc below that was produced by SC and narrated by the amazing Scoop Jackson to learn about them.

FOR INSPIRATION ONLY : EASTBAY CATALOGUES

public.jpg

Today we follow “experts” to show us what’s next based on months/years of strategy to build awareness of future products( I am guilty if this). When new stuff drops, we have alerts set to buy at once. Or head to resellers to pay the markup.

Back when the hunting was pure, and products didn’t drop every day, the sight of an @officialeastbay magazine was the first glimpse into deciding for yourself what you liked and wanted. The footwear from all brands, the clothing to match. Goal was to be the first or only person with it. Oh what a time. This particular cover was released and kicked off sales for the original JORDAN 11. Before this you had to catch the 1 second of the commercial that zoomed in on it or see it on a non HD TV during a game.  But if they were gone, you missed out. #sol Which is why these older styles have so much meaning today.

I wonder if when we look back 30 years from now what will have the same sentimental value to kids today?

Also shout out to the Kemp’s! 🏆🏀🔥 This is part of a larger series I’m working on and can’t wait to release.

FOR INSPIRATION ONLY - SLAM MAGAZINE

TimandLatrell.jpg

Before there was Ball Is Life or Overtime, we had to wait for SLAM magazine to come once a month to get our inside hoop news. Sports Illustrated was for old people and there wasn’t anyone covering basketball the way SLAM did. Shout out to one of my favorite writers Scoop Jackson. I read every single article he wrote in SLAM (Especially Nice & Smooth with Tim Hardaway and Latrell Sprewell) . I always said, that without SLAM, VHS Highlight tapes and Nike, I don’t know what I’d be doing for a living.

Since I grew up in the Bay Area, it was magazines like SLAM, Vibe and The Source that made NYC culture so interesting to me. I’m glad to have met a lot of the people who made SLAM happen and helped brands like AND 1 and any other basketball inspired people like myself to bigger things.

LONG LIVE ROARACLE SERIES

LongLIveOracle_Skatedecks.jpg

For 47 years “Oakland Coliseum” (later changed the name to the “Oracle Arena”), was the home of some of the most culturally relevant teams ever. Forever the underdog, the @warriors built teams that are part of history regardless of record.  It’s safe to say that the people of the East Bay were the common factor in each teams identity.

To honor the time in Oakland and my personal connection to the teams through the years, I created skate decks to commemorate each era.  ** Capping sales at 100/ each deck. Available Now through Threadless!

2019 DANNY RUMPH CLASSIC BANNER ART

DannYRumph_art.jpg
IMG_9478+2.jpg

I created art for the 2019 Rumph Classic. This appeared on a 7’ x 4’ Banner on the baseline and on t-shirts.

More info on the Danny Rumph Classic Here:

The Danny Rumph Classic Basketball Tournament has become one of the premier basketball tournaments in the city of Philadelphia and the signature event for the Daniel E. Rumph II Foundation. The tournament is held in honor of Danny as a tribute to the game he and so many others love. Danny died of a heart condition in 2005 at The Mallery Recreation Center, now the Daniel E. Rumph II Recreation Center. My good friend, Mike Morak and some of his and Danny’s friends started the first Rumph Classic basketball event. What started out as something small in Philly has grown to one of the east coast’s most popular summer events.

The tournament aims to bring awareness to Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM), the leading cause of Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) for today’s youth.

FOR INSPIRATION ONLY - DR. J'S BASKETBALL STUFF

JRJ-video2.jpg

Growing up I used to search for anything basketball. Looking at any video store for anything basketball, helped my understand why my dad like these older players. Looking back now, I’m glad I was able to educate myself. As the years went on the NBA had more videos to watch, and I saw them and studied them all. I’m still and avid collector and will some day curate a playlist. But in the meantime, enjoy!

THANKS FOR THE MEMORIES

dustinocanalin

As KD makes the move that I made long ago (The Bay to NY), and Andre trades in good mexican food for good BBQ, I wanted to reflect on the last few years. It’s definitely not the end of our DYNASTY, but a new page.
Thanks to KD and Andre for making the Bay your home and bringing championships to Roaracle. As the team brings in new faces and moves across they bay, we will never forget where we came from.

It’s been an amazing run for the@warriorsFamily (including me✊🏽) To commemorate the best team ever, I’ve created a one of a kind playing cards set titled “DYNASTY PLAYERS CARDS”. All 52 playing cards were hand illustrated by me. Edition of 100.

6.23. - HAPPY GO HOOP DAY

GOHoopday-2019.jpg

Go Hoop Day kicks off today for the 2nd time ever with celebrations all over the U.S. Thousands of people got outside, in the gym or wherever there was a ball and a hoop to celebrate the game we all love. I was able to get out and get a few shots up but I wanted to celebrate the best way I know how to today. Thank you basketball for providing infinite inspiration. I hope my work reminds you of why you love the game.

6.13.19 - The Final Golden State Warriors Game will be played in Oakland before moving to San Francisco.

I’ve been going to watch the warriors in Oakland  since Sleepy Floyd was getting buckets.  I’ve cheered a last place team with Earl Boykins who would hit for 30 on a cold Wednesday night with the crowd as loud as they are watching the Finals vs. Lebron. (maybe louder). Studied Tim Hardaway’s game (my favorite player) even before RUN TMC was diagnosed. RUN TMC wasn’t together long enough.  I got excited when we got the 1st draft pick and got Cwebb to join “RUN TM-Spree” - Got sad when we drafted Todd Fuller. 🤮. Was pissed when they changed the uniforms to the lightning bolt but the brand of basketball with a young Jason Richardson, GILBERT Arenas and ANTWON Jamison lit the fire for Baron Davis, matt Barnes, Stephen Jackson to make a run and open the doors to the first wave of bandwagoneers (you know who you are ) - The Monta era was full of hope but when new owners and Bob Meyers took the reigns shit got real. Can’t thank Bob enough for architecting the Splash Bros and then Hampton’s 5.

Even living through our current day dynasty, the games most remembered are sellouts against the nuggets just to yell at an old Bimbo Coles and Mark Price. We earned this dynasty.

It’s gonna be the same after today. The makeup of the fans and culture on there east bay shaped the character of this team. Thanks for creating one of the most iconic culturally relevant sports teams ever. Now don’t go and get bourgois on us. Forever Town Business #fuckgentrification

A new mural installed at Boys Don't Cry in NY, in honor of The NBA Finals. As in all of my work, a level of detail and authenticity is what inspired the latest work. Located on The Lower East Side’s iconic Orchard St. I wanted to make sure that I was able to convey the neighborhood, the people, shops and culture that presided before today. See how many people you can identify.
